Detroit Red Wings injured defenseman Simon Edvinsson skated Monday for the first time since it was revealed he would be out until the start of the season with a lower body injury.
Asked whether he had a new time frame for Edvinsson, Coach Todd McLellan said: “Not quite yet. But the fact he’s out there skating…it’s not overly serious. It’s something that would keep him off for a little while. He’s actually on the ice quicker than I thought he might be, but we are not going to risk anything. But he’s progressing well.”
After Moritz Seider, Edvinsson is Detroit’s second-most important defenseman. It would be helpful for McLellan to have him ready early enough to see how his defensive pairings work best. Does he consider playing Edvinsson with Seider or does he use him with veteran newcomer Travis Hamonic?
The Red Wings need Edvinsson to take his game to another level to improve their playoff chances.

Czech free agent signee Michal Postava was a poised presence in net for the Red Wings in a 5-2 win against the Buffalo Sabres.
Former Toledo Walleye/Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Jan Bednar is 4-0 in Finland in the early going.
Bob Duff is wondering if we are seeing some hope with coach Todd McLellan’s team?
