The Buffalo Sabres struggles have gone on for over a decade, and now a top analyst has called out the ownership as the biggest reason behind those issues.
The Buffalo Sabres may have never been a top tier franchise in the NHL, but for a long time, they were highly competitive with some of the top players in the entire National Hockey League.
However, over the past 15 years, the team have been incredibly poor, as they’ve struggled to develop & retain talent, while missing the playoffs for an NHL longest stretch of 15 years.
Do the Sabres need a new owner?
There are many reasons behind the struggles, and analyst Adam Gretz with Bleacher Report has laid those issues bare, calling out the team to make many changes, especially to the ownership if they are to turn things around.
When laying out every team’s best case scenario for this season, Gretz took a major shot at the Sabres, noting that they need many changes, especially to ownership.
A new general manager.
Another fire sale of the roster.
Ideally, a new owner, because the common denominator in this entire run of futility has been Terry Pegula.
Sure, the drafting hasn’t been great and the team have dealt with injuries and players wanting out, but as Gretz notes, the one common denominator of all of that is the ownership, with Pegula overseeing perhaps the worst stretch of hockey in NHL history.
Unfortunately, things aren’t going to change in 2025/26 either, and despite the young talent on this roster, until the Pegula’s are out as owners in Buffalo, this is a Sabres organization that is going to continue struggling.
