Marshall Rifai was hoping to earn a spot in Toronto this season, but now he’s set to undergo surgery after suffering an injury against the Montreal Canadiens.
The NHL pre-season is all about giving opportunities to young players to earn their way into the league, and in Toronto, they’ve got plenty of players trying to do exactly that.
One of them is 27-year old grinder Marshall Rifai, who has spent the last two seasons with the Toronto Marlies after appearing in two games for the Maple Leafs back in 2023/24.
Marshall Rifai suffers major setback
Unfortunately, Rifai has now suffered a major injury setback in the pre-season after a collision during Toronto’s clash with the Montreal Canadiens, with fans noticing he didn’t return after a collision with Joshua Roy.Now, Head Coach Craig Berube has revealed some bad news on Rifai, revealing he’s set to undergo surgery on a wrist injury that will keep him out ‘for some time’, with no specifics given on a potential return timeline.
In 63 games for the Marlies a year ago, the 6-foot-2 defenseman tallied 3 goals and 13 points, once again using his physicality to make an impact on the game, something he was hoping to do with the Maple Leafs at some point in 2025/26.
Thankfully for Toronto, they’ve got plenty of blue line depth in the organization, but for Rifai, given the lack of opportunities he’s gotten, suffering an injury like this one is a setback that he simply couldn’t afford.
Now, the hope is that he can get back to 100% at some point this season as he looks to continue pushing for his NHL dreams, something that may or may not ever come to fruition in Toronto.
