Pittsburgh Penguins goalie Joel Blomqvist’s quest to join the opening night roster came to an end this week.
The third goalie, who played 15 NHL games last season, was termed day-to-day earlier this week, but a Penguins announcement indicated that absence would be much longer.
The Penguins announced that Blomqvist will be out for four weeks with a lower-body injury.
Blomqvist, 23, finished his scheduled time on Monday against the Montreal Canadiens. He split the time evenly with Sergei Murashov, but on Wednesday, he was termed to be out for a short time.
Last season, Blomqvist posted an .885 save percentage in his 15 NHL contests, but a much better .914 stopper rate with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins in 18 games. Injuries and the call-ups limited his AHL time.
Blomqvist is in the third and final year of his entry-level contract. He remains waiver-exempt and can be sent down to the WBS Penguins when healthy.
