The Detroit Red Wings are withoout a top propspect and remain without a veteran, but at least one players is on the near horizon.
Coach Todd McLellan said on Monday, Sept. 29, that Nate Danielson “will be out for a little bit” because of an undisclosed injury.

“I don’t have a timeframe, whether it’s long or short term, but we’ll figure that part over the next few days,” McLellan said.
McLellan also did not have a timeframe for James van Riemsdyk, who has yet to be at camp for family reasons.
“He needs to be here as soon as he can be,” McLellan said. “But we’re not on the phone saying, hey, drop what you’re doing, because that’s not what this is about.”

When Van Riemsdyk, 36, does arrive, he will need several practices to catch up with teammates, who have been skating for nearly two weeks already. That casts into doubt whether he will be able to take part in the exhibition season, which ends Oct. 4.

Defenseman Simon Edvinsson, who has been dealing with a lower body injury, has been part of practices the last few days and may be able to play either Oct. 2 or 4, both of which feature the Wings playing the Toronto Maple Leafs. McLellan was confident Edvinsson will be available when the Wings open the regular season Oct. 9.
“He’s getting close,” McLellan said. “Opening night, I don’t see any reason why he isn’t playing, and we’ll make smart decisions with him this week as far as games go.”
