The Dallas-area high school football scene has long been one of the nation’s strongest, producing players who shine on Friday nights before moving on to bigger stages. In today’s NIL era, transfers are more common, making it easy for fans to lose track of where their former standouts land.
This series highlights former Dallas-area players now excelling in college football. Here are three wide receivers who had standout performances in Week 5:
Johntay Cook II, Syracuse, WR
The former DeSoto wide receiver was ranked No. 4 in The Dallas Morning News’ Class of 2023 rankings. He starred on a DeSoto team that won a state championship. After leaving DeSoto, Cook transferred from Texas to Washington before landing at Syracuse, where he has carved out a big role.
Texas College Sports
Cook has 26 catches for 318 yards and one touchdown this season. The junior had seven catches for 61 yards in a loss to Duke on Saturday.
His breakout game came in Week 4, when he had six catches for 113 yards against Clemson.
Dakorien Moore, Oregon, WR
The two-time state champion at Duncanville has emerged as one of the nation’s top freshman wide receivers. He was The Dallas Morning News’ No. 1 player in the Class of 2025 and owns a 79.0 Pro Football Focus grade, among the highest for true freshmen at his position.
He leads Oregon — a College Football Playoff team last season — in receptions (19) and receiving yards (296) this year. He had seven catches for 89 yards in a win over No. 3 Penn State on Saturday.
He also has a rushing touchdown and a return touchdown this season.
Jordyn Tyson, Arizona State, WR
The former Allen wide receiver originally committed to Colorado, but after a mass exodus following Deion Sanders’ arrival, Tyson transferred to Arizona State, where he developed into one of the nation’s top receivers.
He has 1,584 yards and 17 touchdowns in 20 games with Arizona State and is projected as a first-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. On Friday, he caught eight passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns in a win over TCU.
