Todd McLellan: Updates on Red Wings James van Riemsdyk, Nate Danielson

Detroit Red Wings coach Todd McLellan, Sept. 30, 3025 in Detroit.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygård again showed off what a natural shooter he is as the Detroit Red Wings rebounded with an exhibition victory.

The team’s first-round pick from 2024 (No. 15 overall) redirected a pass from Dylan Larkin into the net of the Chicago Blackhawks (2-2-0) at United Center on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The Wings (3-3-0) went on to win, 3-1, after dropping three straight games, including a dud the previous night at home.

Brandsegg-Nygård, who turns 20 on Oct. 5, was in the slot to one-time the puck midway through the first period. It was his second goal and fourth point in five preseason games. Axel Sandin Pellikka drew an assist, his second in five preseason appearances.

J.T. Compher had made it 1-0 less than four minutes into the game. Lucas Raymond scored late in the second period. Colton Dach scored at 2:53 of the third period on veteran goalie Cam Talbot, who played his first full game of the exhibition season.

The Wings’ penalty-killers had quite the workout, faced with being shorthanded six times.

The Wings wrap up the preseason with a pair of outings against the Toronto Maple Leafs: Thursday in Toronto (7 p.m., NHL Network) and Saturday at Little Caesars Arena. They open the regular season against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 9.
