The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Buffalo Sabres to open a preseason-ending home-and-home at KeyBank Center on Wednesday night.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1-1) take a three-game winning streak into Wednesday night’s preseason game with the Buffalo Sabres (3-1-0) at KeyBank Center. The teams will meet again to close the preseason on Friday night in Pittsburgh. The Penguins won’t have backup goalie Joel Blomqvist (lower body) for at least four weeks, while wingers Kevin Hayes (upper body) and Rutger McGroarty (upper body) will miss the start of the regular season. Buffalo goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (lower body) is expected to be ready for opening night, while winger Jordan Greenway, recovering from core surgery in mid-July, has missed most of training camp.

Pittsburgh took a 2-0 lead through two periods on Monday night and held off the host Detroit Red Wings for a 2-1 victory. Tommy Novak scored what proved to be the game-winner at 4:38 of the second period after Ben Kindel lit the lamp 3:40 into the game. Tristan Jarry worked the entire game in net, making 21 saves.

The Sabres last played on Saturday, taking down the Red Wings 5-2 at home. Tage Thompson put together a big night with two goals and an assist, while Josh Norris notched a goal with a pair of helpers. Rasmus Dahlin and Radim Mrtka scored first period goals to give Buffalo a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish.

The Penguins appear to be embracing an all-out rebuild, leaving the futures of aging stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang in doubt. The Sabres, meanwhile, again attempt to end the longest playoff drought in NHL history — now standing at 14 seasons — with the addition of 25-year-old defenseman Michael Kesselring, acquired in a trade from the Utah Mammoth back in June. Along with Kesselring, Dahlin and Owen Power, Buffalo has more options for the top two blue-line pairs for a defense that tied for 30th in the NHL in goals against.
