The Pittsburgh Penguins assigned five players to their minor league camp Thursday morning, but further pared their roster when they waived six more players Thursday afternoon.

The moves were tipped off by the Group B practice roster on Thursday morning.

Danton Heinen, Valtteri Puustinen, Joona Koppanen, Sebastian Aho, Phil Kemp, and goalie Filip Larsson hit the waiver wire at 2 p.m.

If they go unclaimed, they can be assigned to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

Heinen was in his second stint with the organization after they re-acquired him near the 2025 NHL trade deadline. However, the winger’s competent offensive output wasn’t enough to earn him a job in the crowded field of forwards.

The cuts reduced the Penguins’ roster to 33 with one more preseason game remaining. The Penguins will host the Buffalo Sabres on Friday.

Puustinen was the Penguins’ 2019 seventh-round pick. He’s played 66 NHL games.

The other players in Group B on Thursday morning included prospects Owen Pickering and Tristan Broz.

The players will be claimed or clear waivers at 2 p.m. Friday. The team needs to clear 10 more players to finalize its roster.
