ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — Work on the Skating Rink in the River Arts District continues.

The skating rink will be located on a concrete slab on the second floor of the building at 99 Riverside Drive.

The rink will serve as the new home base for the Asheville Hockey League (AHL).

As previously reported, AHL said the city’s only outlet for hockey, which was in Carrier Park, was destroyed during Helene.

A representative from the AHL says they are trying to get the rink up and running for the community to use it as quickly as possible.

Right now, enough of the rink is built to start holding practices.

“We’ve had a couple youth practices out here already, but because of the complexity and all the different things to fully get the rink fully operational, we’re kind of having some soft openings,” said Bart Hodgins, Executive Board Member for the Asheville Hockey League.

The rink is planned to host youth inline hockey, community skate nights, birthday parties, private rentals, and special events.
