CRANBERRY — Owen Pickering and Tristan Broz joined a couple of NHL veterans in the Group B practice Thursday morning, which was a bit of a surprise as Penguins coach Dan Muse clearly separated his expected NHL lineup and minor league roster for the first time.

Broz and Pickering played in the Penguins’ 5-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres Wednesday night. Broz has played well in a few preseason games and has been relied upon in a defensive role.

Group B was primarily composed of AHL contract players, including Aidan McDonough, Chase Pietila, and Phil Kemp.

Should Pickering indeed go to the AHL, the three left-handed defensemen would be Parker Wortherspoon, Ryan Graves, and Ryan Shea.

However, as Muse has warned several times throughout training camp, nothing is set in stone.

Assistant coach Rich Clune and director of player development Tom Kostopoulos ran practice.
