Simon Edvinsson talks injury recovery during Detroit Red Wings camp
Detroit Red Wings defenseman SImon Edvinsson, Oct. 1, 2025 in Detroit.
With the exhibition season almost over, the Detroit Red Wings pared down their roster and fielded a lineup closer to what will be on the ice in another week.
A few prospects – and not every veteran – did make the trip to Toronto to play the Maple Leafs on Thursday, Oct. 2 at Scotiabank Arena, where the Wings went with a formation of 11 forwards and seven defensemen. The Wings rallied from an early deficit and scored three times in the the third period to win, 3-1.
The Leafs played most of their regulars, and superstar Auston Matthews made his presence known with a power play goal two minutes after puck drop. Wings captain Dylan Larkin tied it up five minutes into the third period when he converted Ben Chiarot’s rebound past Anthony Stolarz. Seven minutes later, Michael Brandsegg-NygÃ¥rd battled down low in traffic to knock the puck towards Alex DeBrincat, who turned it into a goal.
It was Brandsegg-NygÃ¥rd’s fifth point in six preseason games.
Emmitt Finnie, like Brandsegg-NygÃ¥rd one of the few remaining prospects still with the team, assisted on Larkin’s goal and picked up an empty-net goal with 1:24 to play.
Earlier Thursday, the Wings assigned forwards Ondřej Becher, Sheldon Dries, John Leonard, Amadeus Lombardi, Dominik Shine and Austin Watson; defensemen William Lagesson, Ian Mitchell and Antti Tuomisto; and goaltender Sebastian Cossa to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Additionally, the Wings designated forward Nate Danielson – who coach Todd McLellan said earlier in the week looked like he would have made the team – and defenseman Shai Buium as injured non-roster.
The Wings wrap up the preseason Saturday (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Detroit) with a home game against the Leafs. They open the regular season against another Original Six foe, the Montreal Canadiens, on Oct. 9 at Little Caesars Arena.
