(WPDE) — October is past the peak of Atlantic Hurricane Season, but many notable hurricanes have occurred in the month, including a handful of storms that have made landfall or directly impacted the Grand Strand.
In particular, four hurricanes in recorded history have moved within 50 miles of Myrtle Beach. These storms are the Great Charleston Hurricane of 1893, the Halloween Hurricane of 1899, Hurricane Hazel in 1954, and Hurricane Matthew of 2016.
Origins of tropical cyclones in October migrate west as more cold fronts and disturbances can develop tropical lows in the Gulf, western Caribbean Sea, and western Atlantic.
They can still form near the Cabo Verde Islands, but the frequency of that drops during October as waters become cooler and upper-level winds become less favorable.
Storms that form east of the Cabo Verde Islands in October rarely ever hit the mainland U.S.
As a matter of fact, only two have ever done so in recorded history. Those are Hurricane 13 in 1887 and Hazel in 1954.
Hurricane Season ends on November 30.
