The Pittsburgh Penguins (3-1-1) have won a few preseason games in a row as the battle for roster spots has intensified. On Wednesday, the competition for several spots will come to a head as the Penguins visit the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center.

The puck drops just after 7 p.m.

The Penguins are taking many of the same players they took to Detroit on Monday–younger players who are scrapping for their NHL spot and others who are fighting for their NHL career.

The Penguins beat Detroit 2-1 at Little Caesars Arena.

A few battles could be decided on Wednesday. Forward Robby Fabbri is on PTO, and he is due a decision on whether the team will offer him a contract.

Penguins first-round pick Ben Kindel will also be in the lineup. Kindel has exploded over the past week, and his recent preseason performances have raised the real possibility that the 11th overall pick could make the opening night roster.

Others forwards in the battle, Tristan Broz, Avery Hayes, Filip Hallander, Rafael Harvey-Pinard, and Sam Poulin, will also suit up.

On the Penguins’ blue line, would-be rookies Harrison Brunicke and Owen Pickering will play. In fact, all of the defensemen in the fight for a roster spot are on the roster, as Ryan Graves, Ryan Shea, Jack St. Ivany, and Matt Dumba are on the list.

Tuesday, Pittsburgh Hockey Now previewed the defensemen who are playing well, and the D-men who are in trouble. Likely, two right-side defensemen will not make the NHL roster, as Brunicke, Dumba, and Connor Clifton are vying for the third-pairing spot.

It might be a night for all of the marbles, and the young players have everything to gain.
