Macklin Celebrini won’t play in the San Jose Sharks’ second-to-last preseason game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Friday.

With a back-to-back situation to finish the preseason, the Sharks have kept their training camp roster bigger than other teams around the NHL.

Celebrini skated on a line with William Eklund and Tyler Toffoli during the non-game group portion of Friday’s morning skate.

As for whether Celebrini will play against the Utah Mammoth on Saturday? Sharks head coach Ryan Warsofsky wouldn’t commit to him playing.

“I haven’t gotten an update from the training staff to see how he felt,” Warsofsky said. “You’ll see most of those guys in the lineup tomorrow.”

Celebrini has told reporters on multiple occasions that he’d like to get into a preseason game. He states that timing and chemistry with his new teammates can be best tuned during an actual game.

Warsofsky did tell reporters that the Sharks organization is okay with playing Celebrini on opening night without him featuring in a preseason game.

“Every guy wants to play, right? We’re at that moment where, especially our veterans, they’re over training camp. They’re over the exhibition games. They want the live bullets,” Warsofsky said. “I know [Celerbini] hasn’t played yet. We know that if he doesn’t play, we’re comfortable. If he does, I know he’ll act like it’s game seven of the Stanley Cup Final. That’s the mentality we want.”

The San Jose Sharks could treat tomorrow’s game against the Mammoth as a dress rehearsal. With opening night rosters due on Oct. 6, Friday and Saturday’s games are critical for many players vying for an opening night spot.
