Defenseman Jack Johnson’s attempt at landing a contract with the Minnesota Wild did not go as planned. The 38-year-old veteran was released from his professional tryout on Friday.

Johnson, who played for the Avalanche for three years, was successful four years ago, while on a PTO with Colorado. He went on to be a key, consistent piece of the Stanley Cup championship run in 2022.

But one has to wonder if this is the end of the road for him. Colorado’s other 2022 champion, Erik Johnson, retired on Wednesday. Will Jack follow?

He’s still a UFA and can sign with any team. There’s also the option of entertaining offers to play overseas or on an AHL contract if the priority is to continue his playing career.
