► FOLLOW ALONG

• Final: Penguins win, 2-1. Ben Kindel and Tommy Novak with the goals.

• Final minute.

• Red Wings’ net is empty.

• GOAL: Red Wings get on the board with 3:40 left. Dominik Shine gets by Chase Pietila and Alex Alexeyev, beats Tristan Jarry from in close. Penguins 2, Red Wings 1

• Penguins to the power play with 6:53 left. Valtteri Puustinen drew an interference minor.

• I didn’t die, this is just a very slow period.

• Another good chance from Ben Kindel.

• Matt Dumba just annihilated Jonatan Berggren with a hit along the boards.

• Three minutes into this period, no shots.

• Third period is underway.

• Ben Kindel is 5-1 in faceoffs.

• End of the second. Penguins lead 2-0, goals from Ben Kindel and Tommy Novak. Shots are 15-14 Penguins.

• Penguins’ possession leader is Ryan Shea. Again, actual time with the puck on his stick, not shot attempts as a proxy.

• Dominik Shine just had a big hit on Chase Pietila, gave him an extra couple whacks too.

• Penguins kill the penalty.

• Patrick Kane hits the crossbar.

• Starting the PK: Ryan Shea, Matt Dumba, Robby Fabbri, Danton Heinen

• Penguins to the PK with 7:49 left. Boko Imama for tripping.

• Shots are 5-4 Penguins 11 minutes into this period.

• Penguins kill the penalty.

• Now on the PK: Danton Heinen, Robby Fabbri, Ryan Shea, Matt Dumba

• Starting the PK; Joona Koppanen, Sam Poulin, Ryan Graves, Jack St. Ivany.

• Penguins to the PK with 12:42 left. Valtteri Puustinen to the box for high-sticking. I don’t know how that’s even physically possible, his stick is like two feet tall.

• Chase Pietila is again getting in the faces of Red Wings at a whistle. What a guy.

• GOAL: Tommy Novak doubles the lead. Actually tried passing the puck to Filip Hallander, it bounced off Hallander and back to him, Novak knocks it in over the goal line. Penguins 2, Red Wings 0

•  By the way: Technical issues with the stream, apparently. They didn’t find out it wasn’t working until shortly before the game.

• Second period is underway.

• Ben Kindel continues to do well in faceoffs. He’s 3-1 to start this one.

• End of the first, it’s 1-0 Penguins. Shots are 7-6 Red Wings. Goal aside, the Ben Kindel line with Ville Koivunen and Avery Hayes was the Penguins’ best.

• The Ben Kindel line leads the Penguins in offensive zone time (actual offensive zone time, not using shot attempts as a proxy for that).

• Not even 15 minutes into the game and Boko Imama has three hits.

• Every time Chase Pietila is on the ice he’s getting under the skin of a Red Wing and getting into it at the whistle. Saw a lot of that in his brief Wheeling stint last year.

• Back to full strength.

• Second power play: Ryan Shea, Ben Kindel, Danton Heinen, Ville Koivunen, Avery Hayes

• First power play: Matt Dumba, Filip Hallander, Robby Fabbri, Phil Tomasino, Tommy Novak

• Penguins to the power play with 13:07 left in the first. Alex Debrincat tripped Jack St. Ivany, who has drawn several penalties this preseason.

• Six minutes in, Penguins are being outshot 5-2. But they have the only shot that matters.

• Alexander Alexeyev shoots the puck right at the head of an official. Brief delay.

• They’ve got to give Ben Kindel a nine-game tryout, even if it means someone like Tristan Broz goes down to start. Kindel almost surely should go back to the WHL for the full season. But he’s earned more time here.

• GOAL: First shot, first goal for the Penguins. Great pass from Ryan Shea finds Ben Kindel in the slot, Kindel buries it. Penguins 1, Red Wings 0

• Red Wings have the game’s first three shots, three minutes in.

• One of the cooler details in this building: The banner start up in the ceiling then dramatically descend for game time:

• This is underway.

• I feel like I stole from this place with how much Little Caesars I got at the media meal. Don’t ask.

• Quick takeaways from these combinations: That’s a fun second line. Kindel back at center will be interesting to see again, he’s been getting better at faceoffs throughout camp. Graves and St. Ivany were actually good in their brief history together. Surprised (in a good way) that Pietila gets another game and isn’t the odd man out here on D.

• So, scratches are Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Phil Kemp.

• Penguins’ lines and pairings:

Filip Hallander – Tommy Novak – Phil Tomasino
Ville Koivunen – Ben Kindel – Avery Hayes
Sam Poulin – Robby Fabbri – Danton Heinen
Boko Imama – Joona Koppanen – Valtteri Puustinen

Ryan Graves – Jack St. Ivany
Ryan Shea – Matt Dumba
Alexander Alexeyev – Chase Pietila

• Just saw Jason Spezza. I’m like, “PTO goalie didn’t show enough? Had to let him go?” And he deadpans, “Yeah, he lost that shootout.”
