One issue is that Sasson was one of just three forwards still on the preseason roster who was exempt from waivers. This is the 25-year-old centre’s final season of being exempt from waivers, and he will become waiver eligible this season if he plays another 31 games in the NHL.

That means asset management, rather than just preseason performance, had to play a factor in the Canucks’ decision. Sasson could be sent down to the AHL without having to clear waivers and risk another team claiming him. That’s not the case for Arshdeep Bains, Aatu Räty, and Linus Karlsson, who are all waiver-eligible.

At the end of the day, these cuts are necessary, but in Sasson’s case, you can expect to see him back up with the Canucks in no time.
