The Ottawa Senators wasted no time time making decisions.

Steve Staios, the club’s president of hockey operations and general manager, and coach Travis Green must submit the club’s 23-man roster to the National Hockey League’s head office by 5 p.m. Monday as the Senators prepare to open the season against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday.

Training camp came to an end with a 3-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night at the Bell Centre, and on Sunday, the club assigned seven players to its American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville.

Six of those assigned _ Jan Jenik, Hayden Hodgson, Olle Lycksell, Arthur Kaliyev, Lassi Thomson and Mads Sogaard  _ were placed on waivers Sunday at 2 p.m. and will have to clear on Monday to be sent down.

The players on waivers will skate with the club on Monday

Centre Stephen Halliday was also moved to Belleville, but doesn’t require waivers.

Most of the roster is set with 13 forwards and nine defencemen and two goalies, but the health of winger Drake Batherson and defenceman Tyler Kleven will also determine what the final roster will look like.

The club still has 24 players. Batherson or Kleven would have to go to injured reserve to not make any more moves.

Don’t fret too much about players getting picked up on waivers because teams don’t usually make claims at this time of year. Here is a look at what happened on Sunday.

The final cuts

C Stephen Halliday: He’s had a good camp and will be available to be called up if the club runs into injuries.

C Jan Jenik: This will be the second straight year that he’s among the final cuts. Battled for a spot, but came up short.

F Hayden Hodgson: Did his job by providing toughness in the pre-season, but he’s tabbed to go to the AHL.

G Mads Sogaard: He’s on a one-way contract, and if this were based on camp alone, he might start the year here. Leevi Merilainen gave up 10 goals in the two pre-season starts he made.

Toughest calls

These were difficult to make because both had good camps.

F Ollie Lycksell: He’s had an e camp after being signed as an unrestricted free agent in the summer. Earned praise from Green on Saturday in Montreal.

F Arthur Kaliyev: Was given a good chance to play on a top line against the Habs and didn’t look out of place. Has the skills, but should start the year in Belleville.

The big one left

D Carter Yakemchuk: The club’s first-round pick in 2024 has had what Green called a “good” camp. Last year, the 20-year-old Yakemchuk was great before being sent back to the Calgary Hitmen.

There is a good chance he’ll start the year with Belleville, but that’s still be determined. There is no need to rush him, and the best bet for Staios is to take the same path the organization took with Kleven.

That means leave Yakemchuk in the AHL for the full season and let him make the jump next year. It will help his game immensely, and it did for Kleven.

This will be the only decision under the microscope.

Still here

D Donovan Sebrango: Give this guy credit, he played in every pre-season game, and probably deserves to start the year here. He will be a phone call away if he does got down. Has put himself on the radar screen.

Health questions

Green noted in Montreal that he wasn’t sure about Batherson’s health and whether he’d be ready to face the Bolts.

He pulled a muscle in practice 10 days ago, and Green was “hopeful” that Batherson would miss two weeks. That timeline would have put him back to face Tampa on Thursday, but Batherson will need some physical contact in practice before getting the green light.

Kleven, who suffered an ankle injury in the club’s first pre-season game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sept. 21, has been skating with Batherson the last couple of days.

If that duo is unavailable, it will impact decisions.
