College hockey is back at the University of Vermont. Both the women’s and men’s ice hockey teams took to the ice at Gutterson Fieldhouse for two home games the same day. The women’s team wrapped up their latest weekend series against No. 6 Penn State University. Vermont exceeded its total goals in a single game from Friday’s loss but was unable to take the win, falling 5-3 on Saturday, Oct. 4. Vermont tallied two goals in the second and third period with scores by Makena Lloyd-Howe and Lauren O’Hara. Josie Hemp scored an equalizer goal for the Catamounts in the first period to tie things at one, but the Nittany Lions responded with four straight unanswered goals. Vermont head coach Jim Plummer shared that a weaker defensive effort in comparison to Friday night’s home opener against Penn State, plus some mistakes at the beginning of the game, could have fixed a slower start, which led to the 5-1 hole at the end of the second period. “We were really pleased that on Friday we only gave up 24 shots in the game,” Plummer said. “I think we were much worse defensively on Saturday, so we got to put the two pieces together, but to get a power play goal to overcome that really fluky first goal that we gave up. I thought we had a really good first half of the first period, but then it went downhill until the third period.”The men’s hockey team was able to get in the win column after a 5-2 victory in an exhibition match against Brock University, a college hockey team based out of Ontario, Canada. Vermont jumped out of the gates fast with two quick goals by Colin Kessler and Cedrick Guindon for a 2-0 lead. Brock’s Tai York responded with back-to-back power play goals to even things at 2 all in the first period. Kessler was able to respond in the final minutes of the first period to take a 3-2 lead for Vermont. Max Strand and Guindon followed up with goals of their own in the fifth period for leading to the win. With three out of five of the Catamount goalies coming on the power play and a combined 13 penalties between the two times, the physicality of the contest matched the environment of a regular season. That energy between both teams is something Vermont head coach Steve Wiedler and his Catamounts thought were beneficial before their first official game starts on Friday, Oct. 11. “Yeah, I think they did an unbelievable job. They’re well-coached,” Weidler said, talking about Brock. We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game. They fit the bill and we needed that. I thought it was great to play an intense team because that was very similar. But we’ll see when we get into NCAA play.”See the highlights from both games above.
