While the Pittsburgh Penguins universe was focused Friday upon the potential rookies who could inhabit the roster, the final preseason game was also an audition for a few veterans fighting for spots in the lineup.

Pittsburgh Hockey Now spent the bulk of Saturday morning double-checking stats, advanced analytics, and pondering the best roster construction.

In addition to the push for youth, Penguins general manager Kyle Dubas overstocked his roster, both giving opportunity and limiting it.

As the team careened past the final showcase, beating the Buffalo Sabres at PPG Paints Arena, the totality of camp and preseason games became the case for and against several veterans who were not exempt from the competition.

And then, honest to goodness, seconds before this story was to be published, the Penguins beat us to the punch and gave away all of the answers.
