Two Canadian Teams Battling Over Former Vancouver Canucks Goaltender Before the New Season Begins

A former Vancouver Canucks goaltender, who was placed on the NHL’s waiver wire on Sunday, is reportedly drawing interest from a pair of Canadian franchises.
As was expected at some point before opening night, the Boston Bruins put Michael DiPietro on the NHL’s waiver wire on Sunday, with the hope that he’ll clear and be assigned to the AHL, but not so fast as teams around the league have been showing interest in him, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman.
“More goalies of note on waivers today: DiPietro (BOS), Daws (NJ), Stevenson (WASH)…they have all had interest.” Friedman said.

In a recent article for RG.org, sources told James Murphy that two Canadian teams were among those with interest in Michael DiPietro and could be in the mix later today when waiver claims are announced.
Those two Canadian teams – the Calgary Flames and the Toronto Maple Leafs, with the source also telling Murphy to keep an eye on the Carolina Hurricanes, although after they claimed Brandon Bussi off waivers on Sunday, it seems unlikely that they could be a landing spot.
“I’ve heard the Maple Leafs and Flames have expressed trade interest in him before. I’d also keep an eye on the Hurricanes. Look, this kid was expected to have teams willing to sign him if he hadn’t re-upped with the Bruins just before free agency started. Teams have called on him before, and if he goes through, I’d be surprised if he’s not claimed.” the source told Murphy.
Both Calgary and Toronto seem like logical destinations for Michael DiPietro at this point give each team’s goaltending situation heading into the 2025-26 season.
During training camp, the Flames didn’t see what they were hoping for from Russian netminder Ivan Prosvetov, who they signed as a free agent out of the KHL in the offseason, leading the club to go with Devin Cooley as their backup, for now.Meanwhile in Toronto, the Maple Leafs are without Joseph Woll, who is away from the club for personal reasons, and because of that General Manager Brad Treliving went out onto the free agent market and brought back one of the club’s former netminders, James Reimer, on a PTO.
Because of the uncertainty surrounding when Joseph Woll might be back and the Maple Leafs likely wanting Dennis Hilldeby to be the starter with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, they seem like a good landing spot for DiPietro.
However, one thing that hurts the Maple Leafs in this situation is the NHL’s waiver order, with 29 other clubs getting a chance to place a claim on DiPietro before they do.
It’s certainly going to be interesting to see where Michael DiPietro ends up just after 11 a.m. PT as it seems like it’s all but confirmed that his time with the Boston Bruins organization is coming to a close.
