Wayne Gretzky has agreed to a multi-year extension with Turner Sports to continue as an analyst for its broadcast of NHL games in the U.S. The extension was announced on social media Monday morning.

Gretzky, 64, holds most of the NHL’s major offensive records and is its all-time points leader. He was passed as the league’s leading goal-scorer last season by Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals.

Known as “The Great One” for his dominance as a player, Gretzky has tried his hand at several jobs within hockey since his retirement after the 1998-99 season. He was a minority investor and coach with the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2000s. Additionally, Gretzky served as executive director of Canada’s men’s hockey team for the 2002 Winter Olympics, where Canada won the gold medal in Salt Lake City.

“For those of us old enough to remember the commercial ‘When EF Hutton talks, people listen’ — when Wayne Gretzky talks, everyone should be listening,” said Kenny Albert, Turner Sports lead play-by-play broadcaster. “His recall is unbelievable. He can tell you in exact, precise details about so many of the games he played in, the goals he scored, the people he played with, etc. Anytime you have the greatest player of all time in their particular sport on your panel, on your pregame show, on your intermission and postgame show, it just brings such credibility.”

Gretzky joined Turner Sports as a studio analyst for the 2021-22 season, the first of a seven-year broadcast deal with the NHL. He was encouraged to take on the role by former Los Angeles Kings teammate Rick Tocchet, who had also signed with Turner. Tocchet has since gone on to coach the Vancouver Canucks and Philadelphia Flyers.

Gretzky does not appear in-studio for every NHL broadcast on TNT or TBS. However, he has been part of Turner Sports’ coverage of NHL tentpole events such as the Stanley Cup Final and Winter Classic.

How Gretzky fits with TNT

Gretzky is TNT Sports’ most famous NHL analyst simply based on his name. They compete (at least in the attention economy) with ESPN for NHL coverage, and Gretzky helps by being on your airwaves. He has played off well with the others on that show as the famous straight man (countering Paul Bissonnette). He’s not going to do a ton of on-air dates compared to the people who are always in the studio, but where you really want him is for opening night/the playoffs. If there is one thing that is a little surprising, we don’t often see people of that fame head into broadcasting outside of the NBA, but that has changed a bit in recent years with Tom Brady, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. — Richard Deitsch, media reporter
