Cowan skated as the 13th forward in practice on Monday, and head coach Craig Berube was non-committal when asked about whether the 20-year-old would be on the roster for Wednesday’s season opener.

“Just keep working. Keep practicing,” Berube said of his message for Cowan. “He’s had a good camp. No decision’s been made. So, that’s where we’re at.”

As it turns out, the decision will be to have Cowan continue to grow in the minors before getting his first taste of NHL action.

Cowan authored an impressive campaign with the London Knights last year. He posted 29 goals and 69 points in 46 games, adding 13 goals and 39 points in 17 playoff games as London repeated as OHL champions.

At the Memorial Cup, the 2023 first-round pick posted three goals and seven points to tie for the tournament lead in scoring and took home the Stafford Smythe Trophy as tournament MVP.

In other news, goaltender Cayden Primeau, who was claimed off waivers earlier on Monday, will be the team’s backup behind Anthony Stolarz while Joseph Woll continues to be away from the team to deal with a personal matter.
