He scored 99 points in 65 games last season with the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen. Kindel impressed during his first NHL training camp, scoring one goal and two assists in six games this preseason. Injuries to forwards Bryan Rust, Kevin Hayes, and Rutger McGroarty opened an opportunity for Kindel to make the team, just months after being drafted.Brunicke, 19, was picked in the second round of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft. He proved to be an effective contributor last season with the Western Hockey League’s Kamloops Blazers, netting five goals and 25 assists in 41 games. He also appeared in ten games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at the end of last season. Brunicke won a spot on the defensive group during training camp, putting up a goal and an assist in four games during the preseason. The team waived defenseman Ryan Graves, opening a spot for Brunicke on the roster. Offseason trade acquisition Arturs Silovs will start the year in a goaltending tandem with Tristan Jarry. Last season, Silovs backstopped the American Hockey League’s Abbotsford Canucks to a Calder Cup championship, winning the playoffs’ most valuable player award in the process. A spot opened for Silovs after Joel Blomqvist went down with an injury early on in camp.The Penguins play their regular-season opener Tuesday night against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
