Less than two years after the Seattle Kraken made Berkly Catton the No. 8 overall pick in the 2024 draft, he’s set to make his NHL debut at just 19 years old.

The lefty-shooting center is one of three Kraken draft picks included on Seattle’s opening night roster for the first time.

Seattle Kraken hope additions will help avoid another losing season

Catton, a native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is familiar with the Pacific Northwest, having played for the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League since the 2021-22 season. He was third in the WHL last season with 109 points, fourth with 71 assists and 12th with 38 goals. Playing with Spokane meant regular road trips to the Puget Sound to play the Seattle Thunderbirds, who make their home in Kent, and Everett Silvertips.

Catton had one goal in five preseason appearances for the Kraken over the past two-plus weeks.

Jani Nyman had four goals to lead the Kraken in the preseason, while Ryan Winterton was second on the team with two preseason goals. They are the other Kraken draft picks to make the team’s opening roster for the first time.

Nyman, a 21-year-old right wing from Finland, had six points (three goals, three assists) in 12 games as a rookie for the Kraken last season. The Kraken selected Nyman in the second round of the 2022 NHL Draft.

Winterton, a 22-year-old center from Ontario, was a third-round draft pick by the Kraken in 2021. He played nine games for Seattle in 2023-24 and 12 games in 2024-25. He enters this season with one career NHL point.

The Kraken will open the season at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena at 7 p.m. Thursday against the Anaheim Ducks.

After missing the playoffs for a season straight season, the Kraken hired Lane Lambert as their new head coach last spring. Seattle finished the 2024-25 campaign with a 35-41-6 record, which put them in seventh place in the eight-team Pacific Division.
