The San Jose Sharks have announced their official opening night roster, which includes top rookies Michael Misa and Sam Dickinson.
Arguably, the storyline coming into Sharks training camp was whether Dickinson and Misa were going to make the NHL right away. As it stands, they have. Although their season-long spot is not yet confirmed, it is a good sign to see both of them on the initial roster.
In order to get to the 23-man active roster, the Sharks sent down four players before Monday’s 2 p.m. PT roster deadline. Top prospects Ethan Cardwell, Luca Cagnoni, and Zack Ostapchuk were sent down to the San Jose Barracuda.
Pavol Regenda, who was placed on Waivers on Sunday, was also sent down.

After those moves, the Sharks were still left with more than 23 active players. News has now come out that defenseman Jack Thompson and forward Egor Afanasyev are injured.
The two players are not listed on injured reserve. The Sharks have placed them on the injured/non-roster list, meaning they aren’t considered part of the active roster.
According to PuckPedia, there isn’t a massive difference between a player on injured reserve and the injured/non-roster list. The only difference is that Thompson and Afanasyev’s cap hit will still count towards the San Jose Sharks’ salary cap.
“No difference really,” PuckPedia tells SHD. “Counts on the cap (unless there’s a pro-rated amount due to season-opening IR) but doesn’t count against the 23 active roster limit.”

Ryan Ellis, Logan Couture, Carey Price, and Lucas Carlsson are on the season-opening IR. Ellis, Couture, and Price are all retired and won’t play a game for the Sharks.
