Howard starred for the Spartans the previous two seasons, including winning the Hobey Baker Memorial Award for top college hockey player in the country. Howard was initially expected to return for his senior season and play for Michigan State this year, but was traded by the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Edmonton Oilers in the offseason. That trade ultimately made way for him to leave Michigan State early since it resulted in him having the opportunity to immediately join a NHL roster.

This season-opening matchup between the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames is scheduled to start at 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
