Nathan MacKinnon topped Joe Sakic for most points in an Avalanche jersey on Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Kings. Sakic hit 1,015 points in 870 games. This was MacKinnon’s 871st game with Colorado, and he assisted on Martin Necas’ season-opening goal to top Colorado’s Hall of Fame former captain.

MacKinnon entered the offseason with as many points in as many games as Sakic did in his career with the Avalanche. The team’s president of hockey operations also played 508 games with the Quebec Nordiques before they relocated to Colorado, totaling 1,378 games.
MacKinnon hit 1,000 on March 10 and finished last season with 116 points.
Sakic holds the franchise record for most points, with a career total of 1,641 points in his 20 seasons with the Nordiques/Avalanche. If MacKinnon remains with the franchise his whole career, he could surpass Sakic’s career-high, given the pace he’s been on in recent years.
