While it might be very early on in the 2025-26 season, goaltender Arturs Silovs is beginning to prove that the Vancouver Canucks may have made a mistake by trading him.
The Pittsburgh Penguins were among the teams to open up their 2025-26 regular season schedule on Tuesday night as they headed to The Big Apple to take on the New York Rangers.
“Head coach Dan Muse confirms that Arturs Silovs will be starting in goal tonight in New York.” the Penguins said.
Muse told reporters, “Silovs has a good camp. We’re going to be looking at both Arturs & Tristan to come up big early this season.”
Former Vancouver Canuck Arturs Silovs shines in Pittsburgh Penguins debut
In his first official game as a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Arturs Silovs stopped all 25 shots he faced, picking up a shutout and helping his club to a 3-0 victory to start the season.
“Ex-#Canucks goalie Arturs Silovs puts up a shutout in his first game with his new team.
It’s the first regular season shutout of Silovs’ NHL career, but he does have one from the 2024 playoffs with the Canucks.” Noah Strang said on X.
Silovs becomes just the second goaltender in Pittsburgh Penguins franchise history to record a shutout in their debut with the team, the other being Maxime Legace, who turned aside 29 saves in his lone appearance with the club in 2021.
“With his first career shutout, Arturs Silovs becomes the second goalie in @penguins history to record a shutout in his debut with the team (Maxime Lagace, 2021).” Penguins PR said.
The Riga, Latvia native also joins Marc-Andre Fleury (2006 and 2013) as the only netminders in franchise history to record a shutout in the team’s opening game of a season.
“Arturs Silovs debut for the Penguins:
🧤 25-save shutout
📈 2.56 goals saved above expected
🌸 2nd Pens goalie ever to earn opening game shutout (Fleury, 2006 & 2013)
🐧 2nd Pens goalie to earn debut shutout (Lagace, 2021)” @PuckReportNHL said.
While Head Coach Dan Muse wouldn’t confirm that he would be going with Arturs Silovs as the team’s full-time starter right out of the gate, after a performance like Tuesday’s, it would be pretty wild if he isn’t between the pipes for Thursday’s home opener against the New York Islanders.
