COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — The Columbus Blue Jackets are gearing up for a pivotal season as they aim to secure a playoff spot for the first time in five years.

Last season, the team showed significant improvement, finishing with a 40-33-9 record, just two points shy of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. This marked a 23-point improvement from the previous season, despite the tragic loss of star forward Johnny Gaudreau in August 2024.

Led by defenseman Zach Werenski, who finished second in Norris Trophy voting with a career-high 82 points, the Blue Jackets boast a strong offensive lineup. Centers Sean Monahan and Adam Fantilli add to the team’s scoring prowess, with Monahan contributing 19 goals and 57 points, and Fantilli netting 31 goals and 54 points last season.

However, defense and goaltending remain areas of concern. Columbus allowed 3.26 goals per game last season, ranking eighth-highest in the league, and their save percentage was 19th out of 32 teams. Goalie Elvis Merzlikins, with a 26-21-5 record, faces competition from Jet Greaves, who ended last season with five consecutive wins, including two shutouts.

The team has made several offseason additions, including center Charlie Coyle and left wing Miles Wood, to bolster their depth. Coyle, who had 17 goals and 35 points last season, is expected to provide a defensive edge when needed.

As the Blue Jackets prepare for their season opener tonight against Nashville, they are hopeful that their new roster and improved strategies will lead them to a successful playoff run.
