A full-scale renovation at the KeyBank Center is currently in the preliminary stages, Buffalo Sabres team officials have confirmed.

The Sabres have had conversations with an architect, Erie County and the state.

Buffalo Urban Renewal Agency owns the land KeyBank Center sits on, Erie County owns KeyBank Center and leases the building from the City of Buffalo, and the organization that owns the Sabres, Terry Pegula’s Hockey Western New York, subleases the facility.

All parties would need to be in sync as to when, or if, a renovation project would take place.

The current KeyBank Center lease expires at the end of the 2026-27 season.

Earlier this year, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said he wanted the county out of the complicated lease, citing liability concerns.Â
