WASHINGTON (7News) — The Washington Capitals are kicking off their 51st season Wednesday night with their home opener against the Boston Bruins — and it could be an emotional one for fans.

This season marks the final year of Alex Ovechkin’s contract. The 40-year-old star hasn’t made a decision about his future, but head coach Spencer Carbery told 7News Sports Director Scott Abraham the team is savoring every moment with the Great 8.

WHAT TO KNOW:

Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. inside the newly renovated Capital One Arena, but the celebrations start well before game time.

Fans can enjoy the team’s Red Carpet event on F Street, where players will arrive around 3:30 p.m. to greet fans, sign autographs and take photos.

There will also be a street hockey rink and face painting for kids.

The first 1,000 fans entering through the Capital One Cardholder entrance will receive a Capitals blanket. Also, everyone attending will get a rally towel and a 2025-26 schedule magnet.

TRAFFIC ALERT:

There will be parking restrictions and street closures beginning 7 a.m. Wednesday.

From 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., the following street will be posted as Emergency No Parking:

F Street from 6th Street to 7th Street, NW

From 7 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., the following streets will be closed to vehicle traffic:

F Street from 6th Street to 7th Street, NWWestbound traffic on F Street from 5th Street, NW
