The Buffalo Sabres could host another outdoor game in the near future.

The team made history back in 2008 when they took part in the first ever NHL Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium, which the Sabres lost to the Pittsburgh Penguins, 2-1, on January 1, 2008.

It hasn’t been held in Buffalo since.

As the team opened their 2025-26 season Friday against the New York Rangers, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman was in Buffalo and spoke on the possibility of bringing the game back to town.

“We’re kind of focused on whether or not we can do it around the 20th anniversary of the Winter Classic, but we have had discussions about the possibility of having an outdoor game at Highmark [Stadium] and its something we think we can do,” Bettman said.

Construction on the new Highmark Stadium is pected to be done in July of next year.
