The new thing in the NHL appears to be surprise jersey reveals, and the Pittsburgh Penguins followed suit while honoring their championship core for an unrivaled feat.
This season, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang began their 20th season together. No trio in major professional sports has ever achieved the feat. The trio began when Malkin arrived from Russia and Letang earned his way onto the team following his final junior season in 2006-07, both joining Crosby, who debuted the season prior.
The trio has won three Stanley Cups and four Prince of Wales Trophies. Later this season, the Penguins will begin giving away bobbleheads of each which join together.
Thursday, the team also surprised when they wore yellow helmets with black jerseys in warmup, but then flipped to the yellow jerseys with three black stripes.
The teamed teased the jerseys in a pregame video, highlighting the sweater and drawing the obvious parallel between the three stripes and the city’s sister bridges spanning downtown to the North Side.

The Penguins saved their core three for final introductions, making special note that no cadre of three players has played together for so long.
