The Boston Bruins and San Jose Sharks are set to enter the season without a captain in place.
The Bruins announced on Wednesday that forward David Pastrnak and defencemen Charlie McAvoy and Hampus Lindholm will be the alternate captains this season.
The Sharks named five alternate captains on Wednesday in Tyler Toffoli, Alexander Wennberg, Barclay Goodrow, Mario Ferraro, and Macklin Celebrini.
Logan Couture wore the “C” for the Sharks from 2019-2024, but has not played since and announced in April he would be stepping away from hockey.
Every team beyond the Bruins and Sharks have named a captain for 2025-26.

Bruins yet to replace Marchand
McAvoy said in the off-season that the Bruins would not have one for the 2025-26 season. The team has not handed a player the ‘C’ since Brad Marchand was dealt to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline on March 5.
McAvoy said in a July interview that he and Pastrnak would be alternate captains this season.
“Going into this year, we’re both going to have A’s. That’s what I know. I don’t think there’s any fire under them to do anything with that. And guess what? That’s totally fine,” McAvoy told Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald. “Me and Pasta are spending the time together, which I’ve found incredible, learning about him a little bit more, about him as a leader.
“Just what I’ll say on that front is I love that we’re going to be able to take this on together. And regardless of letters, we know that this is our team, me and him. And for however many years we get to be here, it’s going to be us two, along with a lot of other guys, right? But this is our baby now, me and him, and there’s nobody else that I’d rather do it with and I know we’re going to make each other better, on and off the ice.”
Marchand wore the ‘C’ from 2023-25 after the retirement of centre Patrice Bergeron, who held the captaincy for two seasons.
Defenceman Zdeno Chara, whose No. 33 is being retired by the team, served as Bruins captain for all 14 seasons he played with the franchise.
