CRANBERRY — The Pittsburgh Penguins are likely getting a pillar of their lineup back Saturday for their game against the New York Rangers.
Bryan Rust will return, probably.
The player was coy in the locker room following the Penguins’ optional morning skate Saturday.
“You’ll have to wait and see,” he responded with a grin.
After suffering a lower-body injury while blocking a shot in the preseason, Rust, 32, has not played in a couple of weeks and missed the first two regular-season games.
Penguins coach Dan Muse was more specific regarding the process but provided no more insight as to whether Rust will play.
“He’s doing well. He’s progressing …This afternoon, there are some conversations still to be had,” Muse said. “With a guy like (Rust), a really important player on this team, for this organization, going into Game 3, we’ve got to be thinking about long-term as well. When that decision is made to go back in, it’s got to be at the right time.”
Last season, Rust scored a career-high 31 goals and was the subject of frequent trade speculation over the summer, but he has spent his entire 11-year career with the Penguins.
All indications that Rust will play were positive, but the final determination won’t be made until closer to game time.
