The Los Angeles Kings had an aggressive offseason with new GM Ken Holland, but one of his additions looks like a total disaster.

The former Oilers GM is taking over the division rival Kings and trying to give them the boost needed to avoid a 5th straight playoff loss to Edmonton. Holland wanted to revitalize LA’s defence, and added Brian Dumoulin and former Oiler Cody Ceci.

Cody Ceci signing looks like early disaster for Los Angeles Kings

Plenty of fans thought a 4 year, $18M contract was a massive overpayment for Cody Ceci, and through the first 3 games of the season, he’s proving the critics right.

With Ceci’s pairing on the ice so far this season, the Kings have been outscored 0-3 and have been absolutely shelled in shots. It hasn’t even been close.

By every metric through the first three games this year, Ceci and the Kings have been dominated.

Edmonton Oilers fans certainly saw quite a bit of disappointing defensive zone play in Ceci’s time with the team from 2021-2024. Mostly used on a pairing alongside Darnell Nurse, Ceci was one to frequently struggle with breaking the puck out of his own zone. That pairing was caved in previous Oilers playoff runs.

At the very least, Ceci’s results in recent years suggest that he’s just incredibly overplayed by his coaches. He may be fine as a team’s 6th defenceman, but he shouldn’t be anyone’s 4th.

At the end of the day though, Ceci is a 31 year old right shot defenceman measuring at 6’3 and 210 pounds. That’s a positional strength that’s kept him in-demand through the NHL, and from his old friend Ken Holland.
