Montreal’s Kaiden Guhle scored the game-winner with just 15 seconds left, giving Chicago their 3rd straight final-period loss of the year.
First Period:
The game started as you would expect between two Original Six rivals with animosity. With a 4-on-4 occurrence just 5 minutes in. Although the Chicago Blackhawks’ power play was able to set up, nothing came of the shortened man advantage. Kirby Dach nearly found Brendan Gallagher at the halfway point, but the puck was deflected out of play to the relief of Blackhawks fans.
Shortly thereafter, both Matt Greczlyk and, later, Connor Murphy were sent to the box. This resulted in over 45 seconds of 5-on-3 for Montreal. As the United Center held its breath, Spencer Knight and the penalty kill, namely Ilya Mikheyev, weathered the storm. The lack of discipline showed once again when Sam Lafferty booked the Blackhawks’ fourth ticket to the sin bin. However, Kinight defended his fortress to the frustration of the Canadiens’ power play. Before breaking for intermission, Bedard got into it with Mike Matheson and Brendan Gallagher. The game was scoreless after one.

Second Period:
The second period was chaos in the United Center. The period started with Cole Caufield recording the game’s first goal by batting in a puck. Shortly after, Sam Rinzel potted his first career NHL goal bar-down on Samuel Montemblaut to even the score. All hell broke loose after a hit on Frank Nazar sparked a line brawl at center ice. Shortly after, Zach Bolduc netted a shot past Spencer Knight to regain the advantage. Arber Xhexaj was called for roughing on Colton Dach, with around 8:45 remaining in the period. While on the power play, Spencer Knight sprawled across his crease to keep a cross-ice chance out. The ensuing rush led to “Bedzar” connecting on a tip-in. More chippiness would continue with Connor Bedard in the middle of it all. The teams were deadlocked heading into the third.
Third Period:
Tell me if you have heard this one before. Montreal got onto the power play early in the period, and Spencer Knight stood tall. Not only on the power play but right after two robbing Suzuki in front. Later in the period, Connor Bedard set up Andre Buraovsky for a chance that rang off the top crossbar. There were just 30 seconds left when Montreal created a mad scramble in the Chicago Blackhawks’ zone. Then, 15 seconds remained when Kaiden Guhle notched the game-winner, leaving Chicago fans heartbroken on the Centennial Season home opener.

The Cowboy Round-Up and What’s On Tap
How fitting it was that the Centennial Season Home Opener gave us a glimpse back to the hockey games of old. The obvious elephant in the room is the lack of discipline. It was aided by questionable officiating, as said by Jeff Blashill. Connor Bedard continues to involve himself in scrums and isn’t shying away from contact this year. The Penalty Kill looked great tonight. Led by Ilya Mikheyev, they weathered the storm as best as they could, all things considered. One last fun fact: Chicago was on pace to break the NHL record of penalties set by Toronto with 16 in 2005.
The unlucky Chicago Blackhawks, currently led by Frank Nazar, who is second in the league in points, will take on the Utah Mammoth at home on Monday. Puck drop at 7:30 Central Time.
