PHILADELPHIA – When you’re playing hockey’s best, it’s a good idea to learn from your mistakes.
That was the case on Monday night when the Flyers, who had dropped their overall season opener at Florida by a 2-1 score last Thursday night, bounced back after surrendering a 2-0 lead and found a way to beat the Florida Panthers, 5-2, at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Sean Couturier’s second goal of the game with 4:10 left broke a 2-2 tie for the game winner. He finished off a shot in front. He finished with four points. Trevor Zegras had the primary assist on the play. Bobby Brink and Christian Dvorak added an empty-netters in the final few minutes.
The decision gave coach Rick Tocchet his first win with the Flyers and evened the team’s season record at 1-1-1.
Dan Vladar, who played well in the initial loss to the Panthers, got the start in goal for the Flyers and once again stood tall against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions.
A breakaway goal by Couturier, set up by Travis Konecny’s extension pass, gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead at 15:47 of the second. Konecny spotted Couturier open at the far blue line. Couturier skated in and sent a rising shot past Daniil Tarasov.
Florida got that one back on a shorthanded goal with 36.7 seconds left in the period. The Flyers got sloppy around their own net and Sam Reinhart poked a shot under Vladar.
In the third, a power-play goal by Sam Bennett with 9:45 to play tied it at 2-2.
Tyson Foerster’s goal at 8:54 of the first period gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
Foerster picked up a pass from Couturier out of the left corner, skated to the left hash marks and beat Tarasov with a low shot.
That gave Foerster at least one point in each of the Flyers’ first three games.
Before the game, Tocchet was asked about the amount of shots his two goaltenders [Sam Ersson the other] have faced so far this season.
“If you look at the third goal [on Saturday night] at Carolina, they scored from the weak side,” Tocchet said. “That shouldn’t happen. We’re not a perfect team yet. The goalies are going to have to make a five-bell save to save those. But I’d rather not have him have to make those saves. That’s an example of what we’re trying to take away.
“I think it builds confidence in goalies most times when they know their backs are protected.”
Parent honored
The Flyers began their home opener with a special ceremony to honor former Hall of Fame goaltender Bernie Parent, who passed away Sept. 21. His No. 1 uniform number was painted into the ice behind both nets. In addition, all Flyers wore a commemorative shoulder patch with the No. 1 inscribed. Further ceremonies are planned for other home games in late November.
Tippett a solid seconds
Owen Tippett scored in Saturday night’s game at Carolina, his 76th goal as a Flyer. Since the 2022-23 season, only Konecny has scored more (88).
Among players chosen in the 2015 NHL Draft, Konecny ranks ninth with 198 goals. Konecny stands 18th on the Flyers’ all-time goals list.
Short shots
The Flyers return to action on Thursday when they play host to the Winnipeg Jets. . .Vladar made a big save on a Sam Bennett break-in five minutes into the third period.
