Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood, who is set to become a UFA next summer, is in line for a massive pay day after a strong start to the 2025-26 season. While a lot of focus recently has been on Quinn Hughes and the fact that he’s eligible to sign an extension next summer, another player that will be without a contract altogether is forward Kiefer Sherwood.Sherwood is set to become an unrestricted free agent on Canada Day and a few months ago, it was reported that the Canucks have already begun preliminary discussions with the American forward about a new deal.
“In a recent appearance on Sportsnet 650 (audio link), GM Patrik Allvin indicated that he has had preliminary discussions about a contract extension with Sherwood’s camp.” Pro Hockey Rumors said.

With Sherwood making the decision to change agents late in the summer, it’s unclear where things stand between the two sides, but one thing is for certain – he’s setting himself up for a nice pay day next summer.
Sherwood picked up a goal during Thursday’s season opening win over the Calgary Flames and followed that up with a two-goal performance yesterday against the St. Louis Blues, putting him on track to smash his career-high of 19 that he registered last year.
“Backhand beauty from KIEFER! 🤌” the Canucks said after Sherwood’s first goal of the game yesterday.
“Shorthanded Sherwood for his second of the night! 🗣️”
The Columbus, Ohio native is earning $1.5 million annually and if he’s able to sustain this play and at least replicate what he did for the Canucks during the 2024-25 campaign, there’s now doubt that he’s going to be looking at double his current salary on his next deal.
“Is Kiefer Sherwood the highest paid Canuck?
He sure is playing like it.
2 goals, leads team with 3.
You wish every player played with his passion.” Dhaliwal said.
NHL insider Irfaan Gaffar gave an update on the contract situation recently, saying that while talks have occurred, there hasn’t been any actual negotiations between Sherwood’s camp and the Vancouver Canucks just yet.”There have been talks, but no negotiations between the Canucks and the Sherwood camp. Sherwood is in the final season of a deal that pays him $1.5 million dollars and he’s due for a raise. It’s going to be at least double what his current salary is, to start.” Gaffar said.
He added, “For me, the most intriguing thing will be how long before the two sides really start to have open dialogue about an extension and where the Canucks are in the standings around the trade deadline. There are for sure a few teams that have Sherwood on their radar If in fact he becomes available.”
Sherwood is likely going to wait as long as he can before putting pen to paper on a new deal as he wants to prove that he can perform like he did last year, which he hopes will land him a big contract, whether that be from the Canucks or another NHL club if he decides to hit the open market.
