As the regular season winds down, several Upper Valley field hockey teams are fighting for playoff positioning.
Mascoma
The Royals (11-3-1) wrapped up their regular season with a 6-0 blanking of Monadnock on Tuesday, and sit in fourth place in Division III.Â
Mascoma has gone on winning streaks of six and four this season and has picked up wins over Gilford, the defending D-III champions, and St. Thomas Aquinas, a team among the top of the division.Â
The Royals’ losses and ties have come at the hands of D-III’s top two teams. They lost to Berlin twice and to Hopkinton once, whom they also tied.
Mascoma, along with other teams in the Upper Valley, will now set its sights on championship glory with the playoffs just around the corner.
Stevens
Elsewhere in Division III, the Stevens High Cardinals are having a solid season of their own. At 9-5, the Cardinals are sixth in the D-III standings.
The Cardinals wrap up the regular season on Thursday at Conant, but before that, they host Newfound on Wednesday.
The D-III playoffs are scheduled to begin with prelims on Oct. 22, and 10 teams will make the tournament. If Stevens can manage to stay in sixth place, they would receive a bye.
Hanover
In Division II, the Hanover High Bears (9-4) dropped their first three games of the season, all against the top three teams in the division: Souhegan, Bow, and John Stark.Â
But after that three-game skid, the Bears have been nearly perfect, winning nine of their next 10 games, including one over last season’s D-II champion, Hollis-Brookline. Hanover’s only other loss came at the hands of Oyster River, which is also towards the top of the D-II standings.
The Bears face off with Pembroke at home on Wednesday and close their regular season on Friday on the road against Plymouth, and will need some help to sneak into the division’s top seeds to earn a bye.
Lebanon
The Lebanon High Raiders (4-11) close the regular season on Thursday at Merrimack Valley, fighting for a playoff spot in Division II.Â
After splitting its first two games, Lebanon went on a 10-game losing streak.
But the Raiders have recovered a bit since then and have won their last three as they make a late push to try to qualify for the playoffs. With one regular season game to go on Thursday, Lebanon is in 13th place, two spots behind the final playoff team.
The D-II playoffs are scheduled to begin with prelims on Oct. 23, and 11 teams make the tournament.
Hartford
Over in the Green Mountain State, the defending Division II champion Hartford High Hurricanes sit in fourth place in the D-II standings with a record of 6-5-1.Â
The Canes’ season has been a bit of a mixed bag: they opened with three wins in their first four, but have stumbled as of late, losing three of their last four.
With a playoff spot in its sights, Hartford will close the season with two games on the road, at Woodstock on Thursday and at Fair Haven on Saturday.Â
Woodstock
Speaking of the Woodstock Wasps, who competed in the D-II playoffs last season, have been strong in Division III, with a 9-4-1 record, good for second in the standings.Â
The Wasps have done a number on their rival, the Windsor Yellow Jackets, beating them three times this season. They have also picked up wins against Brattleboro, Otter Valley, Fair Haven, and Rutland.Â
The Wasps close the regular season this week on Thursday at home against the Canes.Â
Windsor
After bringing home a Division III state title last fall, Windsor is below .500 at 4-6-1 and is in sixth in Division III.Â
Unfortunately for Windsor, the team has dropped four of its previous five games.
The Jacks looked to close out the regular season on a high note this week with home games against Bellows Falls and Brattleboro on Wednesday and Friday, respectively.Â
Playoff pairings are slated to be posted on Oct. 20, with playdowns beginning on Oct. 21-22, per the Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) 2025 field hockey guide, according to the VPA’s website.
