Utica Comets Goalie Nico Daws Called Up to the New Jersey Devils

UTICA, N.Y. — The Utica Comets are seeing some early season roster shake-ups as another player is called up to the big leagues.

After forward Brian Halonen’s recent move to the Devils, Comets goalie Nico Daws is also heading to New Jersey. Daws is stepping in for Devils goalie Jacob Markstrom, who will be out for a few weeks due to a lower body injury from Monday’s game.

Daws just played his 99th game with the Comets during their loss to Cleveland on Friday. Now, he will be teaming up with Jake Allen in the net. The Devils are gearing up for their next game against the Florida Panthers, the defending champs, set for tomorrow night.

With Daws’ departure, the Comets have called up Adirondack Thunder goalie Jeremy Brodeur. Brodeur, a seasoned nine-year veteran, played five games with Utica last season and won four of them.

The starting goalie position will now be a contest between Brodeur and rookie Jakub Malek. Malek, a 23-year-old, has only played one preseason game for the Comets but has three seasons of experience in Finland.

The Comets are set to return to action this Friday night against the Rochester Americans at the Aud, with the puck dropping at 7 p.m.
