SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Mammoth fought and clawed their way to a 3-1 win over the Calgary Flames to open the 2025 home season.

Barrett Hayton and Kevin Stenlund scored their first goals of the season. Off-season trade addition JJ Peterka scored his second goal of 2025.

Utah started the season with three straight on the road in Colorado, Nashville, and Chicago. They went 1-2 in those games. Calgary is four games deep into their schedule, and they are currently 1-3 with their only win coming in a shootout against Edmonton.

The Mammoth, then Utah Hockey Club, and Flames faced off three times last season. Utah got the best of them in all three matchups, scoring at least three goals in each game.

Let’s get loud, Utah fans!!!!

— Utah Mammoth (@utahmammoth) October 16, 2025

First Period

Keller just put one right off of Devin Cooley’s mask from down low.

That can’t feel good.

Utah pushing hard here in the opening minutes. Strong forecheck and getting pucks on net.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Sergachev to the box for a high stick.

Flames PP on deck.

Flames score on the power play.

1-0 Calgary.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Stenlund to the box for interference.

Pretty soft call as both players were battling for position towards the net.

Calgary back to the PP.

1P: 9:16 | 1-0 Flames

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Utah back to full strength. https://t.co/RMw8Bq6nhh

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Schmaltz is tripped and Utah will now head to the man advantage.

Mammoth PP on deck. Great chance to level things here in the first period.

1P: 6:16 | 1-0 Calgary

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Keller is called for a hook.

4 on 4 hockey for 1:10.

I’d need to see that one again, but these are some weak calls…

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Tusky already up to some shenanigans as he extinguishes a Flames fan. pic.twitter.com/9yE2foBXGg

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Barrett Hayton was just tripped and slid across the ice like a penguin.

Mammoth PP on deck. Need to do something here.

1P: 1:59 | 1-0 Calgary

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Breakaway for Logan Cooley but he’s stopped by Devin Cooley.

Tried to go 5 hole but Devin slammed the door.

The Mammoth remain scoreless.

Utah trails 1-0 after the first period.

Another period where they dominate possession and outshoot their opponent 11-5…something has got to give.

At some point the pucks have to start going on.pic.twitter.com/hmeSGR7UJu

Second Period

BARRETT HAYTON SCORES FROM THE SLOT AND UTAH HAS TIED THIS GAME!!!!!

1-1!

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

That new goal horn sure sounds nice!🙌

— Utah Mammoth (@utahmammoth) October 16, 2025

What a save by Devin Cooley for the Flames.

Wraparound attempt by Utah and he jumped from the far post and stuffed the puck with his stick.

Little momentum from Utah after the goal.

Pucks are flying and they’re getting bodies to the net.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Simashev is so smooth in his one-on-one battles.

Closes so fast and utilizes both his body and stick to win the majority of those.

Plays well above his age and experience.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

JJ PETERKA SCORES ON THE BREAKAWAY AND UTAH LEADS 2-1!!!!

Unbelievable speed.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Blazing speed and finesse.

What a filthy finish on the breakaway.

77 is just getting started.pic.twitter.com/PADfXrNlnO

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Flames called for interference.

Utah PP with another chance.

2P: 13:10 | 2-1 Utah

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

2 fights just broke out during Utah’s PP.

McBain vs Bahl & Yamamoto vs Farabee.

Both had it coming.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Another PP opportunity for Utah after Schmaltz was hooked.

They’re absolutely working Calgary right now.

Ice has tilted.

2P: 10:28 | 2-1 Utah

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Utah has called a TO.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Keller just took a face wash from Pachal.

Somebody needs to answer that bell.

Can’t let your captain take that kind of treatment.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

McBain vs Klapka.

Big boy scrap.

Here we go.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Guenther is tripped and Utah will get yet another PP opportunity.

Calgary plays dirty man 😂

2P: 6:12 | 2-1 Utah

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Cooley just STOOD UP Frost in the corner.

My goodness, what a hit.

— KSL Sports (@kslsports) October 16, 2025

Utah leading Calgary in shots 28-8 is actually insane.

Need to put this one away early in the third.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Third Period

Ohhhhh a little toe drag from John Marino.

Nearly finished it too.

How bout that for a D-man.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Roughing penalty against Calgary.

5th PP for the Mammoth. Time to put one away.

3P: 17:03 | 2-1 Utah

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Power play remains 0/5 tonight.

They need to figure that out. Too many opportunities. https://t.co/GEYvZ3rDCu

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Incredible stretch for Vejmelka.

At least 3 or 4 big saves during an onslaught of dangerous chances for the Flames.

He’s kept them all out.

Utah still leads 2-1 with 11:51 remaining.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Vejmelka is called for a trip…idk about that one.

Looked clean to me.

Calgary to the PP.

3P: 9:13 | 2-1 Utah

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Devin Cooley to the bench.

Extra attacker on for the Flames.

1:20 to go.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

Not necessarily the most shots he’s ever faced, but what a game for Vejmelka.

Calgary has been knocking on the door constantly during the third period, but he’s stopped them all.

— Cole Bagley (@BagleyKSLsports) October 16, 2025

STENLUND SCORES ON THE EMPTY NET AND UTAH LEADS 3-1 LATE!

That should do it in SLC.
