Sport: NHL

After the first week of the NHL season, Fantasy hockey managers are quick to lose confidence in players who underperform and trade for those who have overachieved. Between veterans who are proving to still be in their prime and younger players who are struggling to find their game, there are plenty of options for owners to improve their Fantasy team early in the season. With October hockey now in full swing, here are the best buy-low/sell-high targets for week two.

Fantasy Hockey Buy Lows
Matvei Michkov – Philadelphia Flyers

Through his first three games of the season, Matvei Michkov posted zeroes across the board in almost every category, making him a frustrating player to start for many owners last week. Michkov’s performance has left managers so unimpressed that he’s already being dropped in several leagues. He’s currently 83% rostered on Yahoo Fantasy, which is a 8% decrease since opening night, with managers opting to drop the right winger rather than to incorporate him in a trade. However, if Michkov is still owned in your league, he might be the perfect player to buy low in week two.

Those who have no faith in the 20-year-old have seemingly forgotten that he scored 26 goals last year and finished the season with 63 points. Additionally, he’s playing nearly 15 minutes a night, with two of the Flyers three games coming against a difficult opponent in the defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Florida Panthers. Michkov is also recovering from a knee injury that he suffered in the preseason, but as the year continues, the young forward will undoubtedly return to form and is worth taking a chance on.

Dylan Holloway – St. Louis Blues

Dylan Holloway has been underwhelming in the top six of the St. Louis Blues lineup this year, having failed to get on the score sheet in the first week of the season. Similarly to Michkov, Holloway hasn’t provided much Fantasy value, but at the very least has been useful for leagues that track hits, as he’s currently averaging four per game.

Last year, the 24-year-old exploded in his first full season with the Blues, proving to be more than the fourth liner that the Edmonton Oilers thought he was. In 77 games, Holloway nearly eclipsed 30 goals and recorded 63 points, while being a proven bruiser on the ice by logging 165 hits. Although he’s yet to prove it this year, Holloway can be one of the best two-way physical forwards in the league, and is a player owners should consider acquiring for a low price.

Fantasy Hockey Sell Highs
Patrick Kane – Detroit Red Wings

Patrick Kane has shown signs of his younger self throughout the Detroit Red Wings’ first week of the season, having tallied four points in three games. Most of Kane’s production occurred during Detroit’s first battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season, but he has still looked like a scoring threat through each game so far. Although Kane is also featured on the Red Wings’ first power-play unit, now would be the perfect time to sell the future Hall of Famer.

When Kane is playing at the top of his game, many owners are often reminded of his golden days on the Chicago Blackhawks, and may even convince themselves that he’ll return to his prime. The reality is, Kane has proven to be inconsistent with the Red Wings over the past two seasons and can’t be trusted to meet Fantasy expectations on a nightly basis. The 36-year-old’s hot start is impressive, but managers should use his early production as a negotiation tactic to trade for a player who will be more reliable throughout the season.

Juuse Saros – Nashville Predators

Juuse Saros’ performance through three games has been one of the most unexpected stories of the season so far. After the Nashville Predators finished 30th in the league last year, many anticipated them to pick up where they left off, but they’ve significantly improved during the first week of the season, largely because of Saros. In his first three starts this year, Saros has registered a 0.947 save percentage and a 1.64 goals against average, showing signs of his former self in the early stages of the season.

Following Tuesday night, Saros’ recent performances should be taken with a pinch of salt, as the Predators of last year appeared during their clash with the Maple Leafs with Justus Annunen in net. Saros has managed to bail out the Predators so far, but it’s unlikely he’ll be able to maintain his hot streak with a team that’s averaging over 30 shots on goal against per game, making him a valuable sell-high candidate.

Going forward, taking a chance on Michkov or Holloway should be beneficial, with both players still earning top minutes on their respective rosters. Whereas Kane and Saros are stars with too much uncertainty surrounding their teams to rely on them to provide managers with consistency. These players are solid buy-low/sell-high candidates this week, but it’s best to make a move sooner rather than later before they either start to disappoint or begin to play to their potential.
