Cam Atkinson, one of the most celebrated players in Columbus Blue Jackets history, has officially retired from the team after signing a one-day honorary contract.
Atkinson, who began his career with the Blue Jackets as a sixth-round draft pick in 2008, is second in the franchise’s record books for points, goals, and game-winning goals. He is also a two-time All-Star.
“We have so many friends here,” Atkinson said. “This is home for us. The Fifth Line are some of the best fans in the league.”
Atkinson held back tears several times during his news conference, speaking about his love of his family and the city of Columbus.”
“I remember coming here and engraving myself into the city and community,” he said. I’m just happy to call this place home.”
Both Atkinson and General Manager Don Waddell have expressed interest in Atkinson potentially working for the Blue Jackets in some capacity in the future. However, Atkinson plans to enjoy some family time before deciding on his next step.
