After winning their home opener against the Florida Panthers on Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (1-2-1) hosted last season’s Presidents’ Trophy winners, the Winnipeg Jets (3-1-0), at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday.

The Flyers faced the Jets twice last season, finishing with a 1-1 record.

Before Thursday’s game, defenseman Cam York was activated off the injured reserve, and Emil Andrae was sent down to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Dan Vladar had a strong showing against the Panthers, but Samuel Ersson was given the nod between the pipes on Thursday for his second game of this season.

Flyers vs. Jets

It didn’t take long for the Jets to strike first. Just over five minutes into the first period, Vladislav Namestnikov found the back of the net. The first period ended with limited shots on net for both teams, but the Jets were able to enter the second period with a 1-0 lead.

Mark Scheifele doubled the Jets’ lead seven minutes into the second period. Scheifele received a pass from Gabriel Vilardi and buried a shot on Ersson’s glove side. The goal marked Scheifele’s fourth in four games this season.

Owen Tippett put the Flyers on the board less than 10 minutes later. Off the rush, Tippett picked up a pass from Trevor Zegras, entered the zone at blazing speed, and went bar-down on Connor Hellebuyck. Tippett picked up his second goal of the season, while Zegras and Travis Sanheim both picked up their third assists of the year.

It didn’t take long for the Jets to respond after Tippett’s goal. Morgan Barron scored after taking a shot that deflected off the back of Noah Cates and trickled past Ersson.

After 40 minutes of play, the Jets had a comfortable 3-1 lead entering the final period.

In the third period, Scheifele scored his second goal of the game on the powerplay to make it 4-1. Receiving a pass from Kyle Connor, Scheifele fired a one-timer that beat Ersson.

Matvei Michkov scored his first goal of the season with less than three minutes to play in the third period. Michkov picked up a pass from Noah Juulsen and rifled a shot to beat Hellebuyck. Michkov cut the lead in half, but it wouldn’t be enough to mount a late comeback.

Tanner Pearson scored on an empty net with 1:13 remaining in the period to make it a 5-2 game, and gave the Jets two points in Philadelphia.

Despite seven total goals being scored, there were just 32 total shots on goal registered throughout the 60 minutes. The Flyers led in shots with 17 compared to 15 for the Jets, but the Jets finished on more of their chances.
