1. Federal lawyers file lawsuit against Erie County DA’s office over Gendron file
The Federal Public Defenders’ Office is suing the Erie County District Attorney’s Office after being denied access to their file on Buffalo mass shooter Payton Gendron.
2. Buffalo BOE names nine members to new School Closure Committee
The Buffalo Board of Education has approved the members that will make up a new committee, which will be tasked with identifying at least two schools to close at the end of this current school year.
3. Catholic Health hospitals, CWA union vote to ratify new contracts
Catholic Health said the four-year deal maintains pension and health benefits, and includes a push to preserve safe staffing, along with better wages. That includes a minimum raise in wages by 12% over the course of the deal, and increased bonus for working extra hours.
4. Former Buffalo News building to become home of The Golisano Institute
The Golisano Institute, founded by the former owner of the Buffalo Sabres, Tom Golisano, is meant to be affordable to the average student. Students graduate with a certificate in business and entrepreneurship after the two-year program.
5. D’Youville University to expand youth mental health services through new grant
The university plans to serve 300 young people from communities impacted by past drug policies. The initiative will be anchored in D’Youville’s new Community Mental Health Resource Center, which will provide trauma-informed care, psychoeducational support and career counseling.
6. New York’s highest court says state’s new even-year election law is constitutional
The ruling by the seven justices puts an end to a lengthy legal battle over a law passed by the New York state Legislature and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul in December 2023 that moves several local elections outside of New York City to even-numbered years starting this year, with the exception of some city or village elections, and races for county clerk, sheriff, district attorneys, local judges and others protected in the state Constitution.
