This afternoon, it was announced that the Calgary Flames have sent down Matvei Gridin to the AHL to play with the Calgary Wranglers. This roster move was done to activate Jonathan Huberdeau from injured reserve. Huberdeau suffered an injury in a preseason game against the Vancouver Canucks, which held him out for the first five games of the season.

What does this mean for the Calgary Flames?

After a very solid preseason, Gridin made the Flames’ opening night roster out of camp. In his first NHL game, Gridin scored his first goal against the Edmonton Oilers. He would suit up for three more games, going pointless in each. Gridin was a healthy scratch in the most recent game against the Utah Mammoth, which raised the idea that he would be sent down upon Huberdeau’s arrival.

Gridin spent the majority of his time playing on the first line with Nazem Kadri and Matt Coronato. He also lined up with Morgan Frost a decent amount. With Huberdeau coming off injured reserve, he’ll likely fill in the hole with Gridin sent down. As expected, this morning’s line rushes saw Huberdeau with Kadri and Joel Farabee on the first line.

Huberdeau scored 28 goals and 62 points in 81 games last year, which was a great step in the right direction. Now being healthy, Huberdeau will look to continue to build off his best season as a Flame. As for Gridin, time in the AHL will help grow his game at the professional level. Look for him to be an offensive weapon for the Wranglers as the season moves forward. There’s also a good chance we could see Gridin back up with the Flames at some point this season.
