Talk about adding insult to injury.

Already without captain Brady Tkachuk, the Ottawa Senators lost blueliner Donovan Sebrango on waivers to the Florida Panthers on Wednesday.

Trying to send the 23-year-old Sebrango to their American Hockey League affiliate in Belleville, the Senators were hoping they’d be able to squeeze him through on the waiver wire, but the Panthers needed help.

The decision by the Panthers came after Florida coach Paul Maurice told reporters that defenceman Dmitry Kulikov will be out five months after having surgery on his wrist.

Sebrango, who made the Senators coming out of camp after blueliner Tyler Kleven suffered an ankle injury in the first exhibition game, suited up for Ottawa’s first two games, but was a healthy scratch on Monday.

Dealt to the Senators as part of the trade that sent Alex DeBrincat to the Detroit Red Wings in July 2023, Sebrango has been a good soldier for the organization and is an Ottawa native.

The decision by the Panthers to pick up Sebrango will hurt Ottawa’s depth, but the club will have the opportunity to bring him back if he’s placed on waivers by Florida this season.
